Things to do around Berwick-upon-Tweed

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne

Just ten miles from Wigwam Holidays Pot-a-Doodle-Do. Make sure you check the tide times so you can follow the Pilgrim's Path to visit this beautiful and serene island. Steeped in history dating back to the year 635, learn about how Christianity flourished from this ancient location, how the Vikings nearly destroyed it entirely and taste the delicious coffee and mead brewed on the island.

Adventures at Alnwick Castle

Famously the location for the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey, this impressive castle and stately home was built in the 11th Century. It's open to the public, but is also occupied by the Percy family - the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. Tours are available through the impressive rooms of the stately home and the museums and exhibitions that portray the history of the castle and the surrounding areas. It's fascinating stuff and when you add in broomstick flying lessons, a dragon quest, treasure hunts, a tasty lunch at the cafe, a browse round the shop and a tour around the Alnwick Gardens - (featuring the intriguing Poison Garden) it's fair to say you should dedicate a full day to this wonderful place.

Alnwick Castle is a short drive along the A1 from Wigwam Holidays Pot-a-Doodle-Do and will be one of the highlights of your holiday when you're glamping in Northumberland. There are always new exhibitions and events on throughout the year - so be sure to check the website before you go.

Berwick Town Hall & Cellblock Museum

Leave the car behind for a day trip to Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Take a brief walk along the country road from Wigwam Holidays Pot-a-Doodle-Do to the A1167 and hop on a bus at the Old School House. Enjoy the countryside views as you wind through the lanes heading toward town. Before you , pop in to the Berwick Town Hall for a guided tour. Dating back to the 15th century, there's many tales to be told in this atmospheric museum. With graffiti scratched into stone by the condemned in the 1700s and paranormal ghost tours throughout the year (and the night) there's a lot to keep you interested. If you like your history rooted in reality - the guided tours give a huge insight into the history of Berwick.

The tours take around 2 hours, which means you'll be ready for a tasty lunch at one of the nearby restaurants.

Berwick Festivals - all year round

If you enjoy a festival (and who doesn't?) then you'll love Berwick-upon-Tweed. Throughout the summer the towns and villages celebrate with local traditions at gala celebrations, fetes and fairs - all open and very welcome - to holiday makers and visitors. Nestled between Wigwam Holidays Pot-a-Doodle-Do and Berwick-upon-Tweed is the Spittal seaside festival with Punch and Judy stalls, live music and donkey rides.

Film enthusiasts have lots of choice at the Berwick Film & Media Festival - the largest film festival in North East England and the Scottish Borders and foodies can be in heaven at the Berwick Food & Drink festival at the end of summer.
