Wigwam Holidays Sandwath Farm is a rural gem just waiting to be discovered, where any length of stay will take you right to the heart of country living in the historic landscape of the Yorkshire Dales. Tucked between two of our best-loved national parks, it showcases the wild, captivating beauty of Cumbria’s fells and dales from its setting as a busy working farm. From your Wigwam Cabin overlooking the upper Eden valley you’ll find it hard to believe that we’re just 2 hours from Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester, and under 3 hours from Edinburgh!

The historic market town of Kirkby Stephen is less than a mile from our site, and you couldn’t ask for a better base from which to explore the stunning scenery of northern England’s high country, since the Yorkshire Dales National Park is just a few miles away to the east, and the picturesque towns of the Lake District National Park are under an hour’s drive away.. With so much countryside to explore we’re sure that ramblers, runners, strollers and adventurers will all find plenty to fall in love with on a glamping holiday here in the Dales. When your energy is all used up, you’ll enjoy discovering the ‘foodie’ side of our local area among the many gastro-pubs and charming cafés that will tempt you to ease into a cosy chair and take things slow for a while.

We provide everything you need to switch off, unwind and enjoy a relaxed break in our great outdoors, not forgetting Wigwam’s trademark simplicity that allows our home’s captivating landscape to do the talking. The site has three standard Wigwam cabins, two en-suite Wigwam Running Water cabins and one Wigwam Accessible Lodge — whatever level of comfort or assistance you’re looking for, we can ensure that you have all you need to make the most of your Cumbrian glamping getaway.

A welcome sight for weary feet

Kirkby Stephen is a crossroads on celebrated routes both old and new. The famous Settle-Carlisle Railway runs across the fells to the east of the town, and we have our own station which you can use to ditch the car and access the area’s many lovely walks, or as a springboard to explore further afield. Long before the railways came, people were traversing the hills on historic trade routes that today form the basis for long-distance walking routes such as A Pennine Journey and The Pennine Bridleway. More recently, Alfred Wainwright passed through Kirkby Stephen on his much-loved Coast-to-Coast walk from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay — his favourite fish and chip shop in town even bears the route’s name!

Accessible outdoor beauty

You don’t need to spend all day on your feet to appreciate the Eden Valley’s splendour though. It has long been a favourite of keen photographers looking to get the perfect shot of the traditional dry stone walls and barns that are a reminder of the area’s farming history and long-held traditions that still survive today. Whatever the season, the changing light over the secluded, secretive valleys and wild fell-tops are sure to have you captivated. Nature lovers will want to explore the reserves at places like Smardale Gill, or get a better view of their surroundings from the viaduct at Smartville, which is just 2 miles up the road from the site.
A base for explorers

The curious won’t be able to help going a little further afield to take in all that the area has to offer. Heading south on the Settle-Carlisle railway you’ll see the world-famous Ribblehead Viaduct, where in summer you might even catch a glimpse of the Flying Scotsman as it thunders up the line! The further you go into the Dales the more you’ll want to explore the many spectacular walking routes, or the waterfalls at Malham Cove and Aysgarth. You’re spoilt for choice of course, because in the other direction it’s easy to reach the quieter, secluded fells of the Eastern Lake District, where the long, lofty ridge of High Street and its Roman road look down upon the dark waters of Haweswater

Not all adventures take place on two feet however. The Dales are a haven for cyclists, with quiet lanes and hidden bridleways offering a host of new ways to get outside and earn that hearty meal in the evening. If you’re looking for a whole new experience, you might even give caving a go!
