Destination Spotlight - The Scottish Highlands

Wednesday 15 June 2016 @ 13:42

The Highlands offer a fascinating mix of history, culture and stunning natural scenery. Just make sure that, between the hill walking and castle tours, you find time to relax at a village pub and chat with the locals.

Tour the Malt Whisky Trail

Fancy a dram of the good stuff? The Highlands are home to some of the oldest and most renowned whisky distilleries in the world. You can tour nine of them as part of the Malt Whisky Trail of Speyside. Along the trail are some of the country’s most iconic distilleries, including Glenfiddich, Glen Moray and Strathisla, the oldest operating distillery in the Highlands.

Look for Nessie

She’s an elusive ol’ gal, but who knows, you might be just the one to track her down. Have a go at finding the famous sea creature with a boat tour of Loch Ness. Most tours end at the ruins of Urquhart Castle, where you warm up with a spot of tea at the visitor centre cafe.

Earn your views

It wouldn’t be a Highlands holiday without some sort of outdoor adventure. Put on your hiking boots, grab your camera, pack a lunch and take to the hills. Research the region’s many walking trails and keep in mind: the harder the climb, the more rewarding the view!

Grab lunch by the seaside

With the North Sea to its east and the Atlantic to its west, Scotland is surrounded by fruitful seas that have defined local cuisine ever since the first settlers set up camp on its shores. In addition to superb fish and chips, most seaside pubs in the Highlands serve up piping bowls of creamy ‘Cullen skink’. And where better to enjoy the traditional seafood chowder than in Cullen itself? Head to the Rockpool Cafe in Cullen for some Cullen skink paired with a side of hearty oat bread.

GLAMPING IN THE HIGHLANDS:

Wigwam Holidays has several glamping sites in the Scottish Highlands, including the charming East Grange Wigwams in Kinloss, Moray. The family-run farm is the ideal destination for families that are looking for an affordable summer holiday. In addition to providing heated Wigwam cabins for ‘glamping’, East Grange is a bustling activity centre, offering quad biking, archery, laser tag and a range of other activities for all ages.

The East Grange Loft also happens to be one of the area’s best live music venues. You can expect regular performances from local bands across all genres, including blues, indie, folk and Celtic. Previous acts to have graced the Loft’s stage include Mumford & Sons and Paolo Nutini.
