Wigwam News August 2008; Wigwams arrive in Shetland.
|
|
For the first time since Eric the red travelled from Norway to Greenland and laid claim to Newfoundland, the cultural divide between Native America and Shetland has finally been bridged. On the third of August 2008 our most Northerly site opened its doors and welcomed the world to Braewick wigwams to there "splendid"open day. Magnus and Christina Nicolson have two brand new wigwams at their farm and cafe in the beautiful North Mainland, Eshaness.

Spurred on by the enthusiasm and hospitality of Mr and Mrs Nicolson, Wigwam Holidays ventured North (in blazing sun shine) to Scotland's land of the midnight sun, and attended the Voe agricultural show, where the wigwams proved of great interest to the locals, visitors and of course the Vikings.

The Braewick cafe and wigwams proved the ideal location to enjoy the beauty culture and taste of Shetland. The wigwams as always were first class the weather fantastic and the scenery, the history and sheer warmth of Shetland welcome were second to none, but the facilities on offer at Braewick made this writers (and families) trip a Northern pleasure from start to finish.

Highlights included the Shetland museum, Lerwick, midsummer's swims in the Atlantic and North Sea, cycle tours to Eshaness light House, and broch. Puffin watching at Sumbara head, the fine cuisine at the Braewick cafe and of course midnight golf and a boat trip to the oldest broch in the world at Musa. Shetland silver craft at Weasdale is a must where you will receive a warm welcome from proprietor Kenneth Rae and a fascinating tour of the work shops and show room. But one of the best bits of a very worthwhile visit to Braewick wigwams is getting there Northlink ferries runs what can only be described as floating hotels from Aberdeen and Scarbster, there's always flying or go via the archipelago of Orkney! Just go!
